Spain inherited the art of ceramic glazing from the Moore’s during their 800 years of occupation under the Moore Empire. Artists created exquisite ceramic blue-hue masterpieces in the Spanish City of Talavera de la Reina. The original blue-hued glazed pieces became a coveted European artistic luxury due to the time-consuming and laborious creative process. Each craft piece required three months for completion. Upon its artistic molding, pieces were set to dry for at least two months, baked in ovens set at 800 degrees Celsius (1472 degrees Fahrenheit), glazed, set to dry, re-painted and re-baked at 1200 degrees Celsius (2192 degrees Fahrenheit). The Spaniards and their ceramic artisans moved to Mexico – then known as Nueva España – and settled into the Mexican City of Puebla. There, artists trained the indigenous potters in the art of single blue-hue glazing while adding the rich, dazzling, brilliant colors common to the Mexican culture to become what remains today, authentic, magnificent Talavera Pottery. Talavera Pottery remains distinctive due to its unique firing and glazing techniques. As each piece is handmade and signed, EVERY piece is one-of-a-kind.
